Zusammenfassung

At the stroke of midnight, Joe Hardy vanishes without a trace-and a terrifying mystery begins! Frank and Joe Hardy are no strangers to danger, but their tenth adventure plunges them into one of their most perilous investigations yet. It begins with an innocent outing in Bayport, where an encounter with a mysterious fair-haired stranger sets a chain of extraordinary events in motion. When Joe suddenly disappears during a gathering at Chet Morton's farm, Frank initially suspects an elaborate practical joke. But as the hours pass and his brother fails to return, amusement gives way to mounting dread. With the help of their loyal friends, Frank launches a desperate search that leads to the discovery of a sinister hideout in the caves along Shore Road. What happened at midnight, and why would dangerous criminals go to such lengths to silence a teenage detective? The mystery deepens when the Hardy brothers uncover evidence of an elaborate diamond-smuggling operation stretching far beyond their hometown. Following a trail of suspicious characters and mysterious transactions, Frank and Joe travel to New York City, where they encounter a bewildering network of criminals determined to protect their lucrative enterprise. Their investigation becomes increasingly dangerous as the brothers face deception, robbery, narrow escapes, and enemies willing to resort to violence. From shadowy caverns and crowded city streets to dangerous encounters in the skies, the adventure tests the young detectives' courage, ingenuity, and loyalty. As they close in on the elusive smuggling ring, the brothers must rely on their investigative instincts and quick thinking to expose the criminals before another midnight brings disaster. First published in 1931, What Happened at Midnight is the tenth volume in the legendary Hardy Boys Mystery Stories and a memorable example of early American juvenile detective fiction. Written under the Franklin W. Dixon pseudonym by Canadian author Leslie McFarlane, this original adventure preserves the atmosphere, characterization, humor, and suspense that established Frank and Joe Hardy as enduring literary favorites. McFarlane wrote many of the earliest Hardy Boys mysteries, helping define the brothers' resourcefulness, independence, and unwavering determination to pursue justice. This edition presents the original 1931 story rather than the substantially rewritten 1967 version, allowing readers to experience the adventure as it first appeared. Readers who enjoy the mystery are invited to explore more classic Hardy Boys adventures, including The Tower Treasure, The House on the Cliff, The Secret of the Old Mill, The Missing Chums, Hunting for Hidden Gold, and The Great Airport Mystery, discovering the exciting investigations that made the Hardy brothers beloved by generations of readers.

Franklin W. Dixon is the house name used for the long-running Hardy Boys mystery series, created by the Stratemeyer Syndicate. The early Hardy Boys books were written by a number of ghostwriters working under this shared pseudonym, with the original series helping to define American juvenile detective fiction for much of the twentieth century. Built around the adventures of Frank and Joe Hardy, the sons of detective Fenton Hardy, the books combined mystery, action, danger, travel, hidden criminals, and fast-paced clue-solving in a form that appealed to generations of young readers. The Great Airport Mystery, first published in 1930, belongs to the early run of Hardy Boys adventures and reflects the series' classic blend of youthful courage, suspense, and clean adventure storytelling.
