The history of medicine and psychiatry has witnessed many times the untoward consequences of medicine's profound professional ignorance without recognizing our error until generations later. But these people - for all the primitive harm that they produced - were actually trying to help these patients, despite the profound suffering that was the actual product of their dysfunctional medical treatments.
