Zusammenfassung

The future did not arrive with an announcement. It arrived by accumulation.

One more feature in an app we already use. A suggestion that was not there yesterday. A decision made by a system while we still believe it is ours. By the time we look up, we have crossed a threshold without remembering when it happened.

We are in 2050. Artificial intelligence, data, and digital networks are no longer separate tools: they have become the environment in which we work, study, receive care, vote, fall in love, and grow old. Yet this book is not ultimately about machines. It is about the idea of the human being that every machine carries within it, and about what we choose to protect.

Grounded in documented research, 2050 is an interdisciplinary work of public scholarship that combines speculative scenarios with an original framework-the 2050 Test, seven questions to ask before handing a decision to a machine-for deciding when human judgment may be delegated to artificial intelligence, and what safeguards should govern that delegation.

Through eight ordinary people-Sofia, a college student; Amir, sixteen; Davide, a manager deciding how far to trust the plan his systems produced overnight; Luca, a physician; Elena, a mayor; Karim, a warehouse worker; Matteo, in civic communications for a midsize city; and Teresa, seventy-eight and living alone, searching for the boundary between care and control-the book enters the places where the future is actually being decided: work, the city, the university, the hospital, information, identity, art, and human relationships. The scenes form a chorus, not a plot.

Naive enthusiasm produces blindness; indiscriminate fear produces paralysis. 2050 proposes something more demanding: mature hope-adopting technology when it improves life, limiting it when it multiplies harm, and slowing it when it outruns our understanding.

In a world capable of knowing, predicting, and deciding in our place, 2050 asks what it still means to understand, to choose, and to take responsibility. It is written for readers who want not merely to endure technological change but to help govern it.

Published in seven languages: English, Italian, Spanish, French, German, Brazilian Portuguese, and Japanese.

Marco De Prosperis is a writer, scholar, and university executive with more than thirty years of experience in higher education, aerospace, manufacturing, and public administration. Born in Rome, he has lived and worked in Italy, the Netherlands, and the United States, becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2015. His educational background reflects this international experience: he studied electronic engineering in Italy, earned a Master of Business Administration in the Netherlands, and a Doctor of Education in the United States. Over the course of his career, he worked for the European Space Agency for more than ten years, gaining extensive experience in aerospace. He contributed to the design of instrumentation and sensors for MEDET, an experiment carried to the International Space Station aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis during the STS-122 mission and later installed on the exterior of Columbus, Europe's laboratory module, during a spacewalk. Since 2014, he has worked at the University of Arkansas, where he serves in senior leadership roles. His research focuses on occupational stress, work systems, hybrid work, equity, and algorithmic governance. His research has been published in peer-reviewed academic journals, including The Journal of Academic Librarianship. He is the author of the nonfiction books The Future of Technology and Society: A Guide for 2040 and 2050 AI and What Makes Us Human, both published in multiple languages. His experience within complex organizations informs his research and nonfiction writing, as well as the institutional realism of his fiction.
