Freemasonry teaches that a man must be properly prepared before he can properly enter the Lodge for his Initiation. Before he is admitted, he is divested of all metals. This is a symbolic act that shows a deeper truth... that no one can improve themselves while still carrying the hidden burdens they carry inside. This book uses the symbolic language of five metals (gold, silver, iron, bronze, and lead) to show a structured way to look inside one's self. Each one shows a main area of distortion in the self, namely, identity, desire, reaction, relation, and mind, and each one shows the hidden burdens that affect behaviour, weaken judgement, and get in the way of moral and spiritual growth. Drawing inspiration from the framework of the 108 Bonno and reinterpreting it through a distinctly Masonic lens, this work offers a disciplined approach to self-observation, self-governance, and inward correction. It is not a book of abstract philosophy, nor one of passing motivation. It is a manual of labour, and an invitation to recognise what distorts, restrain what corrupts, and refine what remains. Written for Freemasons, yet accessible to any sincere reader engaged in the work of self-improvement, this is a guide to the lifelong task of polishing the ashlar.
