William Henry Giles Kingston (1814-1880) was an English writer and author of many adventure books for children and young adults. He was born in London, but spent much of his life in Portugal, where his family was engaged in the trading business. His debut novel, Peter the Whaler (1851), was so successful that Kingston decided to devote himself to adventure literature, creating more than 130 works over 30 years. His contribution to literature was recognized in Portugal, where he received a knighthood and a government pension.
