The story of Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, who explored Florida, for his King the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, began as a joint expedition with the Cuban governor Panfilo de Narvaez. Núñez and Narvaez soon fell out and went their separate ways, and their conflicts, the loss of life, the savage battles with Native Americans, and Núñez's enslavement by Native Americans were the first documentary evidence that Europeans came to the Americas as healers, rather than conquers.
