J.K. Rowling est l'auteure des livres Harry Potter, dont la popularité perdure. L'idée du petit sorcier lui vient au cours d'un voyage en train retardé, en 1990. Elle entame alors l'écriture d'une série de sept livres dont le premier tome, (Harry Potter à l'école des sorciers), paraît au Royaume-Uni en 1997. Il lui faudra encore dix ans pour terminer la série, qui se conclut en 2007 avec la publication de (Harry Potter et les Reliques de la Mort). À ce jour, les livres Harry Potter se sont vendus à plus de 600¿millions d'exemplaires en 85¿langues, ont été écoutés plus d'un milliard d'heures en version audio et ont inspiré huit films au succès planétaire.

Pour accompagner sa série, J.K. Rowling a écrit trois courts ouvrages -¿(Le Quidditch à travers les âges), (Les Animaux fantastiques) et (Les Contes de Beedle le Barde)¿- au profit de son organisation caritative internationale pour les enfants, [Lumos]. (Les Animaux fantastiques) a par la suite inspiré une nouvelle série de films, qui suit les aventures du magizoologiste Norbert Dragonneau.

L'histoire de Harry devenu adulte se poursuit dans une pièce de théâtre, (Harry Potter et l'Enfant maudit), écrite par J.K. Rowling, le scénariste Jack Thorne et le metteur en scène John Tiffany. Des représentations sont désormais données dans plusieurs villes du monde.

J.K. Rowling est également l'auteure d'une série policière à succès, sous le nom de plume Robert Galbraith, et de deux romans pour enfants, (L'Ickabog) et (Jack et la grande aventure du Cochon de Noël).

J.K. Rowling a reçu de multiples distinctions et honneurs littéraires, dont les titres d'officier de l'Empire britannique et de compagnon de l'ordre des compagnons d'honneur, ainsi qu'un Blue Peter Gold Badge.

Elle soutient un grand nombre de causes humanitaires par le biais de Volant et a fondé l'organisation caritative internationale [Lumos], qui oeuvre à améliorer la prise en charge des enfants placés, et le centre d'aide [Beira's Place], destiné aux femmes victimes de violences sexuelles.

J.K. Rowling réside en Écosse avec sa famille.
