Harrogate in 50 Buildings examines the architectural treasures of this famous Yorkshire Spa town. Established local author Malcolm Neesam has selected 50 of Harrogate's most significant architectural and historical buildings and describes their provenance, design, materials, and use. Many of Harrogate's important older buildings were created to serve the spa that developed after 1571--and whose visitors were essential to the local economy--and the design of these buildings often reflected the visitors needs for accommodation, spa treatments, entertainment, and bodily exercise. The uniqueness of Harrogate largely derives from the spa associations of its buildings. More recently, with the decline of British spas, Harrogate has managed to continue to build innovative and interesting buildings that enrich the community's architectural heritage.
